What the World Needs Now

In my youth I was a HUGE fan of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I knew all the tunes and all the words of all their songs.

Many of their songs are timeless, and still resonate with truth all these years later. One that has been stuck in my brain lately is What the World Needs Now is Love.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord we don't need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last until the end of time

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone

Lord, we don't need another meadow
There are corn fields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh listen Lord, if You want to know

What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some, oh, but just for every, every everyone

What the world needs now is love sweet love

For some of us, this was a protest song against the ongoing war in Vietnam. Today, let it be a song to inspire us to save the planet, to eradicate disease, poverty, discrimination and hatred.

We need to show the world love – towards all of the people on it, and towards the planet itself. We now know that the mountains and rivers won’t last forever if we don’t care of them NOW. But if we DO have love not only for ourselves and but also for our future generations we will find a way to make the planet last until the end of time.
